Within the Woods
is the pilot for the Evil Dead. The film was inspired by a literature
assignment Sam
had to do at MSU. This project required him to study the Book of the Dead.
After doing some research, he decided to write a script for a film centered
on a fictional book of the dead. Sam, with friends Bruce Campbell and
Robert Tapert, formed a motion picture company entitled Renaissance Pictures
to film this script. Unfortunately, they didn't have enough cash, so Sam
rewrote his script to about 10 pages and raised somewhere around $1,600
and set out to shoot this shortened version in hopes of snagging potential
investors for the longer film. Their plan was to create a thirty minute
"senseless gore flick" with the help of special effects artist, Tom Sullivan. |

The Evil Dead "The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror", is the first
film in the cult classic trilogy.
Here's a quote of from Bruce about the film, "In the summer of 1979, Sam,
Robert, and I, collected approximately $375,000 from investors in the
Detroit area and made our first feature film: "The Evil Dead." I starred
as Ash, a witless college student besieged by demons in a quaint cabin
nestled in the Tennessee woods. "The Evil Dead" was highly successful
both critically and financially and officially launched our professional
careers..." Originally entitled "Book of The Dead", the film was shot
Morristown Tennessee. The film took over three months to shoot. Read all
about the three month ordeal in Josh Becker's journal. Evil Dead is the
goriest and of the entire Evil Dead Trilogy with the many depiction's
of body dismemberment courtesy of Tom Sullivan. Evil Dead was the film
that introduced the world to Sam Raimi and made Bruce Campbell a cult
hero and actor. |

Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, is the second film in the cult classic trilogy.
Due to the success of the
first film, Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and the rest of the Evil Dead gang
were able to get more money for investors for a second film. Evil Dead
2 is basically what Sam Raimi intended for Evil Dead 1 to be. So yes you
could call it a remake, but it works well as a sequel in a Sam Raimi kind
of way. The story and some characters were changed, but major elements
of the first were kept. New actors were hired. The only actor from the
first film to stay is of course our man Bruce Campbell. Ted Raimi, who
worked as fake shemp in first film comes back in the second film as the
possessed Henrietta. The sets and special FXs were also improved making
the film even more amazing. This film has plenty of gore but is less gruesome
than. Since Sam Raimi is a big Three Stooges fan, a lot of slapstick has
also been thrown in making this film a horror comedy. |

Army of Darkness is the third and final installment of the Evil Trilogy.
This film was made with a budget
of 30 million allowing Sam Raimi use large scale sets and special effects.
Army of Darkness takes place where Evil Dead 1 & 2 left off. Ash returns
as a bad ass who doesn't take crap from anyone since all the trauma he
had to go through in the first two films. All he wants to do is get home
and so doesn't care much for the primitive screw heads. Ash pretty much
takes control with his bad ass attitude and remington double barrel shotgun
not to mention gets some booty in the film. Army of Darkness basically
is the three stooges meets Jason and the Argonauts. The film is filled
with swashbuckling slapstick and one-liners. The film also contains a
variety of special effects in the film from a massive army of undead skeleton
puppets to blood gushing geysers. The gore factor of this film isn't as
much as the previous two films, but the film is still great to watch. |
